The 7 Steps to Wealth. The 5 Qualities that All Successful People Share. The 10 Things to Lead a Successful Marketing Campaign.
I’ve read so many posts written by people that claim success is a formula. It’s not. People succeed in different ways.
I’ve read so many posts written about marketing for lawyers and how the internet is the most important thing or networking is the most important thing. It’s not. People market in different ways because businesses are different.
But what all successful people do have in common is that they share one very important quality. It doesn’t matter if you invented Facebook, run a successful law firm, or own the best restaurant in town. It doesn’t matter if you inherited your money to build an empire or you were self-made. It doesn’t matter if you invented something or if you just successfully adopted someone else’s idea. The one thing that makes people successful is…
Drive is the desire to succeed. If you want it bad enough, your drive will allow you to get past any obstacle. If you’re poor and you have enough drive, you can be rich. If you’re not the smartest person in the room but you have drive, you will be able to compensate by learning new skills and surrounding yourself with people smarter than you. Conversely, if you don’t have drive, it doesn’t matter if you were given all the money in the world, you’ll spend it and won’t build upon it. Just being smart or being rich is not enough. You must have drive to succeed.
I was at a recent conference for lawyers starting their own law firms, one that I attend and speak at every year. Afterward, there is a reception and I get to talk to all the people in the room and learn about them. I’ve met so many people over the years and I don’t ever hear back from most of them. Because most of them fail. They fail because they didn’t want it bad enough. They wanted success but they didn’t have the drive to get them there. They just wanted it to happen and then sit back and enjoy the fruits of no one’s labor. When confronted with new ideas and new ways to think, they come up with excuses why it wouldn’t work for them instead of finding ways to make it work.
A small percentage of lawyers that attend that conference over the years do succeed. They might not be super rich (because that’s not everyone’s idea of success) but they set a goal and they’re achieving it. Those are the people I keep up with and those are the people that share the one quality with all successful people on earth: drive.
Where there is desire
There is gonna be a flame
Where there is a flame
Someone’s bound to get burned
But just because it burns
Doesn’t mean you’re gonna die
You’ve gotta get up and try, try, try
